Enjoying Each Moment

Just another WordPress.com site

One week ago…

One week ago today…my heart still aches and I try to chase the thoughts away with keeping busy.  I pray for those grieving and hurting…May the Lord comfort you and lead you in the days ahead.  May He fill your emptiness with his love and care.  We mourn with you Newtown.

My Grams sent this to me yesterday and I wanted to share…

Sandy Hook Elementary School

Twas’ 11 days before Christmas, around 9:38

When 20 beautiful children stormed through Heaven’s gate.

Their smiles were contagious, their laughter filled the air.

They could hardly believe all the beauty they saw there.

They were filled with such joy; they didn’t know what to say.

They remembered nothing of what had happened earlier that day.

“Where are we?” asked a little girl, as quiet as a mouse.

“This is heaven” declared a small boy. “We’re spending Christmas at God’s house”.

When what to their wondering eyes did appear,

But Jesus, their Savior, the children gathered near.

He looked at them and smiled, and they smiled just the same.

Then He opened His arms and He called them by name.

And in that moment was joy, that only Heaven can bring

Those children all flew into the arms of their King.

And as they lingered in the warmth of His embrace,

One small girl turned and looked at Jesus’ face.

And as if He could read all the questions she had

He gently whispered to her, “I’ll take care of Mom and Dad.”

Then He looked down on Earth, at the world far below

He saw all of the hurt, the sorrow, and woe.

Then He closed His eyes and He outstretched His hand,

“Let My power and presence re-enter this land!

May this country be delivered from the hands of fools

“I’m taking back my nation. I’m taking back my schools! “

Then He and the children stood up without a sound.

“Come now my children let me show you around. “

Excitement filled the space, some skipped and some ran.

All displaying enthusiasm that only a small child can.

And I heard Him proclaim as He walked out of sight,

“In the midst of this darkness, I AM STILL THE LIGHT.”

Mommy Books and Quiet Time

Mommy Books and Quiet Time

When we took our kid-free getaway a few weeks ago I found two books that I use almost daily now.  60 Promises to Pray Over Your Children by Roy Lessin and 52 Things Kids Need From a Mom by Angela Thomas.  They are truly amazing books and have taught me many things about being a mom.

60 Promises to Pray Over Your Children is a devotional full of prayers.  They are the best prayers I have ever read to say over your children.  The author writes clearly and to the point.  Each day there is a scripture reading and a prayer for your children.  My favorite so far is Shield of Protection.  The author uses Psalm 3:3-5 and part of the prayer is:

“May Your encouragement be with them, Your hope be in them, and Your grace be upon them.  If they are burdened, lighten their load; if they are troubled, calm their storm; if they are discouraged, lift their spirits; if they are unsure, strengthen their faith; if they are weary, renew their strength;….”

I really love this book and plan on using it for many years to come!

52 Things Kids Need From a Mom has given me so many ideas of things I can do to show my kids I love them, accept them and .  Just this week my favorite tips were:

  • To Be Delayed, Rerouted, and Canceled with Poise.  I finished this chapter wondering a couple of things.  Do I handle inconveniences or rude people with poise?  How do my kids see me reacting during the day?
  • To Put Down the Phone.  This is pretty straight forward.  It left me questioning myself about when do I send that quick text or check email?!
  • To Miss a Few Things They Do Wrong.  This one was really good for me to read.  It is okay to not catch every little thing, every little look, or every little stomp away.  I would rather strive, as the author states, “To be a peacemaker instead of a perfectionist.”

My favorite part of this book so far is from the introduction when the author writes:

“Our children need on person on this earth who will love them fiercely, no matter what this life holds.  That task has been assigned to you and me.  So let us learn to love…”

This book is one of my favorites and I recommend it to every mom out there!

I use the books above and the books I discuss below, along with my bible, during my quiet time that I try to get in each day.  During my quiet time I like to read a few devotionals and focus on a scripture reading.  Currently the scripture reading is from an Easter Devotional, Trail to the Tree, I am reading from Ann Voskamp.  Another devotional I use is Power of a Praying Wife Book of Prayers by Stormie Omartian.  The devotional has prayers in it that cover every topic imaginable that you can pray for your husband, His Fatherhood, His Work, His Temptations, His Relationships, His Past and many more!  Two of my favorite parts are:

“I leave any changing that needs to be done in Your hands, fully accepting that neither of us is perfect and never will be.”

Also…

“Make us a team, not pursuing separate, competitive, or independent lives, but working together, overlooking each other’s faults and weaknesses for the greater good of the marriage.”

I enjoy my quiet time each day, I look forward to it and it sure helps keep me grounded during the day.  On a good day I get it done before the house wakes up and feel like I start the day in step with the Lord.  On a crazy day I get it done at nap time or bedtime.  On a out of sync day I don’t get it done at all and miss it terribly.  Whatever time it gets done is great but I really do prefer the morning time best.

What I use during quiet time…

Blessings!

John 17, Crafts and Links

Hello!

Wow it’s been a whirlwind few days.  Feels good to be on the computer typing out a post and slowing down for a bit.

John 17

I came across a really neat scripture this morning that I have not read before.  I pondered it for a few hours and it came up in my mind throughout the day, so thought I would share.  It is from John 17:20.  In John 17:6-19 Jesus prays for His disciples.  In John 17:20-26 Jesus prays for all believers.  I did not know this was in the bible before today.  I know he loves us and forgives us and all that stuff but I never have read before that he prayed for us.

In John 17:20 Jesus says:

I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me because of their testimony.  NLT

My prayer is not for them alone.  I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message.  NIV

NIV Faith in Action Study Bible Commentary for John 17:20-26

Jesus now prayed for his future followers – people he hadn’t yet met, men and women across ages.  He prayed for their unity – not based simply on common beliefs or behaviors, but rather a unity found by participating in the very life of God.  Because Jesus would be in them through the Spirit, they would become participants in the oneness of the Father, Son and Spirit.  That radically different kind of unity would cause the world to believe.

Also in this commentary:

In his longest prayer, Jesus asked God to glorify him in his final days and to bless his followers.

NIV Bible Commentary by John H. Sailhamer

As Jesus was now about to leave his disciples, he prays for their protection in the world (17:6-12) and their continued joy and sanctification (vv. 13-19).  And Jesus looked beyond these disciples to their disciples and prayed on their behalf (vv. 20-22).  His central concern was that these future generations of disciples would continue in unity and love for one another (v. 23).

So very neat to know that before Jesus left this world he prayed for us!  We are all united and we are all disciples.  I think of my kids and how I influence them and how they look to my husband and I for guidance, love, and just about everything else right now.  It brings to my mind a question…What kind of disciple am I being for them?  I am called to be a disciple and I wonder what example I am showing and what I am teaching?  Makes me think…

CRAFTS

So, I love crafty things.  I always have, I just am not super creative.  Give me a pattern and I am set, but wing it and I am lost.  I am the same way in the kitchen…I need a recipe to work from or it will be a disaster!  I love to knit I have been doing it for about 5 years now and I so enjoy it.  I currently am making a scarf for my brother…it is taking me longer than expected (his birthday was in December!) but it’s coming along.  I will post pics of the finished product but here is one to show the status now.  It is a design from Noro: Meet the Man Behind the Legendary Yarn*Knit 40 Fabulous Designs.  It uses Noro yarn in Silk Garden and Yoro.  This is the third one I have made and each time I have picked a different color scheme.  I just love Noro yarn it is so pretty!

I am getting into sewing…I figure if I am going to learn something new I need to do it before our baby boy arrives because then I will have no time to learn anything for a while with 4 little ones!  I have researched sewing machines, read about how to sew on one, and bought all my goodies at the fabric store.  I am currently borrowing my cousin’s machine until I decide if it’s something I will enjoy.  After one time using the machine I have decided and I love it!  I tried it out for the first time last night and it was fun.  Now to find a good deal on a great machine!  My poor husband was the only one around to view all my stitches.  After every practice row I had to get up and show him what I had done.  I have the material for my first two projects and I have a folder on my computer with a bunch of “one day I will do this” projects.  Here are a few pics and links from my practicing last night and of the projects I want to do.

The machine I am borrowing.

My first project link can be found at  Sew4Home.  It is a great website and the projects on their site are step-by-step.  This seems pretty straight forward just sewing straight lines.  Will see how it turns out!

My second project is from a great book I found on sewing.  Fabric-by-Fabric One-Yard Wonders: 101 Sewing Projects.  I thought making something for the new baby would be fun and this seems pretty easy to try out.

Great book on praying for your husband: Power of a Praying Wife by Stormie Omartian.  I particularly love her Power of a Praying Wife Book of Prayers because it is small, compact and lists out all of the prayers from her book.  I bought this right around the time my husband and I got married and I have used this over the years.  She also has a lot of other wonderful books to choose from.

Brain Pickings will keep your mind moving.  As stated on their site: Brain Pickings is your LEGO treasure chest, full of pieces across art, design, science, technology, philosophy, history, politics, psychology, sociology, ecology, anthropology, you-name-itology.  I thought it sounded fun and informative…not your basic read but keeps your mind going with good info.

Prudent Baby is a fun site I started reading and it is filled with a lot of fun crafts.  Check out this one for Valentine’s Day!

MOB Society – For Moms of Boys, By Moms of Boys.  This came through on an email and I  thought since I am having a boy it would be fun to read their postings.

Have a great rest of your week and enjoy!
