Axel James

We welcome our son…

12 weeks ago today our lives changed.  Our hearts grew with more love and we welcomed into our family Axel James.  He arrived on May 23, 2012 at 8:51am.  He weighed in at 8 pounds 1 ounce and 20 3/4 inches.

1 Samuel 1:27

NLT 27 I asked the Lord to give me this boy, and he has granted my request.

NIV 27 I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him.

It was a day filled with excitement, happiness, a bit of worry and much love!  For starters my sister came over to take care of the three girls as Kevin and I left for the hospital.  Roro (my mom) and Nana (Kevin’s mom) took Vivian to her last day of preschool before summer break and then made their way to the hospital.  This in itself is such an exciting thing because this is the first baby we have had close to our moms.  Vivian was born in California and Sylvie and Amelia in Colorado…so the Grandma’s were besides themselves like giddy school girls waiting at the hospital for our little guys arrival!

I remember Kevin and I being so very excited to meet our son! Kevin and I kept busy listening to music on our phones and looking at pictures of the girls.  Finally we were taken into the operating room and soon after Axel made his way into the world.  The anesthesiologist took pictures for us as we watched the nurses take care of him…I am so glad we have these pictures because he took some of the best ones and I can look back and see the first moments of Axel’s life.  I don’t remember much because it was such a blur but I do remember being so in love.  Next came some worry as Axel grunted and grunted and the nurse became concerned that he was not breathing like he should.  Kevin and I were taken back to June of 2010 when Amelia was taken to the NICU and was there for 10 days…we did not want to go through that again.  After they kept him in the nursery for 6 hours he was able to be in my room.  They called it “slow to transition” which means he had some fluid in his lungs.

The next three days were filled with family, friends and many cuddles.  Vivian took her role of big sister very serious…she had Axel in her arms from the moment she walked into my room until the moment she left.  Our moms joke that next to me, Vivian had held Axel the most.

Big Sister Vivian with her brother for the first time!

The last night in the hospital before coming home I was filled with so many emotions…so happy to introduce Axel to his big sisters Sylvie and Amelia who were a couple of weeks away from their second birthday.  Excited to get into the swing of things with four children and yet nervous and a bit fearful of how crazy life would be having four under the age of 5 at home.  I prayed, asked God to take away my fear and fill me with His strength and compassion.  He did just that and all was well at home.  The twins were ecstatic to have a new baby in the house and they have been so gentle and loving toward him.  Yes our days have been crazy at times, we have had all four kids crying at once, and some moments I can only respond to their tears with my own tears but mostly things have been amazing!  Yes, I have had the twins screaming over the same toy and Vivian needing me in the bathroom all while I was feeding Axel.  But, we made it through and can laugh about how crazy things can get.  Our family of six now seems complete and we move forward together to see what God has in store for us!

Here are some more pictures from the first few weeks home…
